International Community: Polio Plus- End Polio NowThursday, 29 March 2012
Myoung-Ok Kwon, President Service Committee
GoalReaching the ultimate goal of a polio-free world presents ongoing challenges, not least of which is a US$535 million funding gap through 2012. By the time the world is certified polio-free, Rotary's contributions to the global polio eradication effort will exceed $1.2 billion. This constitutes nearly 14 percent of all contributions to the global budget through 2010 and represents approximately 66 percent of private sector contributions to the initiative. More recently, Rotary is working with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help raise much needed funds to eradicate polio.
Financial resultsOur club is donating regularly to the Rotary Foundation's Polio Plus program to fight this tenacious disease.
General information / hands-onIn 2011 we supported the program by buying Cinema tickets for the film “The Help”. In 2010 we have contributed like many other Rotary clubs by buying key finders supporting the program, in 2009 at Christmas we raised funds selling self-baked cookies with the support of Betty Bossi test kitchens for this extremely important international service project. Our club also participated in the international polio day in 2008, where several Rotary Clubs together sold sunflower seeds at the Knabenschiessen in Zurich. 75 Rappen already is enough for one vaccination! We spent the day in shifts of 2 hours each flogging our baskets with packets of 10 seeds each. Although it was not all that easy gaining interest to our cause, the day was a success and another step was taken to make this world polio-free.
